Meet the Founder
In the spring of 1958, Norman Albert Langlois graduated from M. Fazio Beauty Academy in Lawrence, MA. A few months later, with $1000 borrowed from a friend, he bought out a small salon in Durham, NH which came to be known as Norman's Hair Styling. Norman's salon became so successful that in 1959 he bought out a second salon in Dover, NH. In the next couple of years he joined forces with J.J. Newbury Corp. and opened two new salons in their Portsmouth, NH and Concord, NH stores. These salons brought about the forming of Langlois Enterprise Inc. in 1962.
Two years later in 1964, another corporation was added - Empire Beauty Academy Inc. - opening his first beauty school in Laconia, N.H. In the late 1960's, a second school was opened, soon to be followed by a third.
The starting of the schools did not slow Mr. Langlois down. Many new salons were being added to the chain in the 1960's as well. The salons spread out through the Eastern states such as Rhode Island, New York, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Alabama and Massachusetts.
The decade of the 70's marked even more and exciting challenges. Another corporation was formed - the Normandy Corp. - as salons in the state of Florida were added. Locating salons in Florida was a dream of Norman's for many years, as he liked the area even as a young man.
In the early 1970's, with so many salons and schools to service, Norman decided to halt expansion in the salons and schools to form another new corporation - Seacoast Beauty Supply in 1971.
The opening of his full service supply company was what was needed to round out the field. He could now train the student, employ the hairdresser, and service
the salon.
Norman's son John joined him to further his efforts. In the mid 1970's, the attention was given to Seacoast Beauty Supply. This was to be the most challenging undertaking for Norman to date. During this 10 year period as the beauty supply company was building, many new salons were being added. With the growth of the beauty supply company, Norman's daughter, Donna, joined forces and soon another division was started with the opening of the first Beauty Saver Store. The 70's ended as exciting as they began with the purchase of another Empire Beauty School in Dover, NH. In the 80's all the businesses supported a total of 1000 employees and Norman was recognized by local media as the "King of the Beauty Business".
In the 90's Norman decided to concentrate his full attention in business to the Empire Beauty School's and therefore sold his supply and store divisions.
He has always maintained that his true love in life is to see other young people have success in the beauty business.
In the new millennium he added two new Empire locations in Portsmouth and Hooksett, N.H. as well as a school of Esthetics.
On November 15, 2006 Norman celebrated his 80th Birthday with over 250 well wishers. He continues to be active in the business and loves to visit his schools to see his students achieve success!
